At least when you look back to 1991. </p>

<p>Just two years earlier, Citroen had introduced the XM, which fulfilled much of what was expected after a CX. And already there some grumbled. Born as Project N2, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/bertone/"><a href="https://www.petrolpunx.com/tag/bertone/">#Bertone</a></a>, among others, was involved in the development of the ZX, and delivered quite interesting designs. But <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/citroen/"><a href="https://www.petrolpunx.com/tag/citroen/">#Citroen</a></a> wanted to play it safe in the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/golf/"><a href="https://www.petrolpunx.com/tag/golf/">#Golf</a></a> class. And so the GS did not get a flamboyant successor with a crazy cockpit, but Citroen went the &#8220;AX-way&#8221;. But let&#8217;s take a look at the benchmark from Wolfsburg. </p>

<p>The Golf MKIII, which was also introduced in 1991, lacked all the elegance of the ZX. And when I look at the ZX today, especially the three-door model, it looks amazingly elegant. It looks elongated and offered the most space in its class in terms of length. And while most of the Golf MKIIIs are slowly rusting away, the ZX benefits from partial galvanisation &#8211; but most of them have disappeared anyway. So let&#8217;s ask the following question: Is it a future classic?</p>

My grandpa had one of these and I always loved the engine noise and it&#8217;s rather quirky sideways opening trunk lid at the front of the car. On some markets the 742 was sold as Estelle, even a Coupé version, the <a href="https://www.petrolpunx.com/tag/rapid/">#Rapid</a>, was available.</p>

The interior design however came from Paul Bracq who later worked for BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It came as rather conservative four door and a massive estate, called &#8220;Break&#8221;. The 505 was and is well known for it&#8217;s almost agricultural ruggedness and remains very popular in Africa even to this day. It&#8217;s hard to kill a 505. It&#8217;s a testament for old cars built quality. Among the many 505 models the Dangel, a raised 4&#215;4 Break, and the Turbo are my personal favourites. The car in the picture is a post 1986 model featuring a facelift and a revised interior. The Turbo was almost top of the line. I think top models featured the infamous PRV V6. Anyways, I dig the period alloys and the overall state of this car. These things are getting rare over here. Like many other european cars the 505 was built in many other countries &#8211; in China it had a second live as Guangzhou-Peugeot 505 and was sold in rather small numbers.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Das Retro-Thema in den 1990ern haben wirklich alle verkackt. Machen wir uns nichts vor: Chrysler PT-Cruiser, VW new Beetle. Das war doch nix. Drauf hatten es die Japaner. Dort wütete die Retro-Welle allerdings schon einige Jahre. Nissan hatte bereits 1987 mit dem Nissan Be-1 ein veritables Retrodesign am Start, das auch taugte. Mit der &#8220;Pike Factory&#8221; gab es bei Nissan eine Abteilung , die sich fast ausschließlich mit solchen Projekten beschäftige. Neben dem Nissan Pao, der sehr eigenständig das 60er Jahr-Design diverser Kleinwagen zitierte, kam 1991 der Nissan Figaro. Auf der unzerstörbaren March/Micra-Plattform widmete man sich allem, was man – wieder – in den 1950er und 1960er so auf die Strasse brachte. Und Nissan hatte ein absolutes Händchen dafür. Der kleine Zweisitzer kam mit halben offenem Dach, Klima und Automatik. Nur 20.000 Stück und ruckzuck ausverkauft. Inzwischen gilt der Figaro als japanisches Kulturgut und darf nicht mehr exportiert werden. Angeboten wurde der Figaro ohnehin nur als Rechtslenker auf dem japanischen Markt. Bis zum Exportstopp gelangten aber genug Exemplare nach Europa &#8211; und sonst wo hin (Duncan Imports in den USA hortet bis heute eine Unzahl davon <a href="http://www.duncanimports.com" rel="noopener" target="_blank">http://www.duncanimports.com</a>). Dieser stand unscheinbar geparkt in Hamburg. Glückwunsch!</p>
