Is the Citroen ZX still boring?

The #CitroenZX was twofold: it was one of the last Citroens of the double digit era, and one of the first, with a shockingly boring design. At least when you look back to 1991.

Just two years earlier, Citroen had introduced the XM, which fulfilled much of what was expected after a CX. And already there some grumbled. Born as Project N2, #Bertone, among others, was involved in the development of the ZX, and delivered quite interesting designs. But #Citroen wanted to play it safe in the #Golf class. And so the GS did not get a flamboyant successor with a crazy cockpit, but Citroen went the “AX-way”. But let’s take a look at the benchmark from Wolfsburg.

The Golf MKIII, which was also introduced in 1991, lacked all the elegance of the ZX. And when I look at the ZX today, especially the three-door model, it looks amazingly elegant. It looks elongated and offered the most space in its class in terms of length. And while most of the Golf MKIIIs are slowly rusting away, the ZX benefits from partial galvanisation – but most of them have disappeared anyway. So let’s ask the following question: Is it a future classic?

Carspotting Part 1: Spanish Lovesongs and a Fiesta in Marabella

On the way to find interesting cars. Always the same recipe. On the edge of town, always an eye in side streets and backyards. And that was parked today.

A #Ford #Fiesta 1.4 GLX. Pretty 1980s look. Only real with white hubcaps. In principle the MKII was a MKI with a strong facelift. Built from 1983 to 1989. And today as good as extinct.

A #BMW 5 Series. Series E28. Probably a petrol engine, which obviously has the best time behind it.

And a #Mercedes Van, a “DüDo”. They were called that because they were built in Düsseldorf. Built from the 1960s to the 1990s. Long before the Sprinter van era, these were still old working machines that were seldom to be found in the fast lane.

Are there still #Seat Marbellas on the streets? Here a “Besito” in blue. Seat built #Fiat models under license for a long time. First the Fiat #Panda, which was originally also called Seat Panda. The Marabella was a further development. A car with nothing for little money.

And last. A #Citroen #2CV. According to the writing on the doors, the car belongs to a healer who has all kinds of charlatanry to offer. After all, it’s a pretty car.

Skoda Type 742

A nice #Skoda Type 742. Not sure if this is a 105 or 120 with more horsepower. My grandpa had one of these and I always loved the engine noise and it’s rather quirky sideways opening trunk lid at the front of the car. On some markets the 742 was sold as Estelle, even a Coupé version, the #Rapid, was available.

Peugot 505

Most of us like rear-wheel drive cars a lot. So let's cut to the chase: The #505 marked the end for rear-wheel drive Pugs.

But the 505 is still a brilliant car. It’s a big #Peogeot, and I love big old Peugeots. So this came to live in 1979, with it’s design made by #Pininfarina and Peugeot. The interior design however came from Paul Bracq who later worked for BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It came as rather conservative four door and a massive estate, called “Break”. The 505 was and is well known for it’s almost agricultural ruggedness and remains very popular in Africa even to this day. It’s hard to kill a 505. It’s a testament for old cars built quality. Among the many 505 models the Dangel, a raised 4×4 Break, and the Turbo are my personal favourites. The car in the picture is a post 1986 model featuring a facelift and a revised interior. The Turbo was almost top of the line. I think top models featured the infamous PRV V6. Anyways, I dig the period alloys and the overall state of this car. These things are getting rare over here. Like many other european cars the 505 was built in many other countries – in China it had a second live as Guangzhou-Peugeot 505 and was sold in rather small numbers.

Figaro, Figaro, Figarooooo

Das Retro-Thema in den 1990ern haben wirklich alle verkackt. Machen wir uns nichts vor: Chrysler PT-Cruiser, VW new Beetle. Das war doch nix. Drauf hatten es die Japaner. Dort wütete die Retro-Welle allerdings schon einige Jahre. Nissan hatte bereits 1987 mit dem Nissan Be-1 ein veritables Retrodesign am Start, das auch taugte. Mit der “Pike Factory” gab es bei Nissan eine Abteilung , die sich fast ausschließlich mit solchen Projekten beschäftige. Neben dem Nissan Pao, der sehr eigenständig das 60er Jahr-Design diverser Kleinwagen zitierte, kam 1991 der Nissan Figaro. Auf der unzerstörbaren March/Micra-Plattform widmete man sich allem, was man – wieder – in den 1950er und 1960er so auf die Strasse brachte. Und Nissan hatte ein absolutes Händchen dafür. Der kleine Zweisitzer kam mit halben offenem Dach, Klima und Automatik. Nur 20.000 Stück und ruckzuck ausverkauft. Inzwischen gilt der Figaro als japanisches Kulturgut und darf nicht mehr exportiert werden. Angeboten wurde der Figaro ohnehin nur als Rechtslenker auf dem japanischen Markt. Bis zum Exportstopp gelangten aber genug Exemplare nach Europa – und sonst wo hin (Duncan Imports in den USA hortet bis heute eine Unzahl davon http://www.duncanimports.com). Dieser stand unscheinbar geparkt in Hamburg. Glückwunsch!
